The Brothers Quay

I have been in love the Quay brothers even sense Shen introduced us to them in art and design lessons in collage and their style of film making is something quiet unique and truly breath taking. The Quay Brothers are identical twins who were born in Pennsylvania in 1947, Stephen and Timothy Quay studied illustration in Philadelphia before going on to the Royal College of Art in London, where they started to make animated shorts in the 1970s and have lived in London ever sense. The Quays display a passion for detail, a breathtaking command of color and texture, and an uncanny use of focus and camera movement that make their films unique and instantly recognisable. They are completely mesmerising and you just end up just sitting there pressing rewind watching their films all over again. They are masters of miniaturization and on their tiny sets have created an unforgettable world, suggestive of a landscape of long-repressed childhood dreams. I find it rather amazing how in our lectures we’ve been looking at narativs but never had a look at The Quay Brothers seeing as we have to do so much video work. Shame on you JW! but here have a look.
